Refrigerant R-22 vs. Refrigerant R-410a

Today, in response to growing environmental concerns, production of systems using R-22 refrigerant is being phased out.

Acting in accordance with an International treaty called the Montreal Protocol, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act.

As of 2010, the manufacture of systems using R-22 refrigerant was prohibited, and by 2020 the production of R-22 refrigerant will cease.

The main reason for this regulatory action is that R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) compound, which contains ozone-depleting chlorine. R-410a contains no hydrochlorofluorocarbons.

R-410a is the refrigerant of the future.

All manufacturers of cooling systems now manufacture HVAC equipment that use refrigerant R-410a.

Equipment that was designed and produced to use R-22 are not designed to use R-410a.

The availability & use of R-22 refrigerant is still premissible in systems manufactured prior to 2010. However, availability of R-22 refrigerant supplies will become short in the coming years.

Unfortunately the reduction in the production of R-22 refrigerant has already started and the price of R-22 refrigerant has greatly increased for the servicing and repair of R-22 HVAC systems.
